What to Expect From Your Lawyer — An Honest Note to Our Clients

//

Jewel Chanda

We want to talk to you honestly about something most law firms never discuss openly — what it actually feels like to be represented by us, and what we genuinely expect from you in return.

We Fight For You. That Is What We Do.

We are lawyers. Every single day, we step into other people’s battles — for the property that is rightfully theirs, for the maintenance their family needs, for the bail that protects their liberty, for the justice that ought to be done. We carry these fights with us. We think about them late at night. We worry about the next hearing, the missing document, the witness who may not turn up. This is the nature of the work we have chosen, and we do it because we believe in it.

But because we are fighting real battles for real people, every single day, across multiple courts, across multiple cases, we are not a polished corporate helpdesk. Neither we act nor we look like ramp-walking models. We are, honestly, a little clumsy. Our profession is built on dedication, not appearances. We often work through sleepless nights, do not eat on time, and frequently neglect our own health—not out of choice, but because our commitment to our clients and the pursuit of justice comes first. Behind every legal solution lies relentless effort, sacrifice, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. We are overloaded. We juggle hearing dates, drafting deadlines, client meetings and court appearances, often all on the same day. We do not always reply within the hour. We are not always available the moment you call. But when it matters most—when our clients need us in the arena where their battles are fought—we are there, standing firmly on the front lines.

We tell you this not to make excuses, but because we believe a client who understands how a litigation practice genuinely works will be a calmer, better-served client.

When Lawyers Take a Breath?

There are times — perhaps twice or thrice a year — when we step away for a short vacation. We disconnect from the office, from the phone, from the case files, for a few days. This is not neglect of your matter. It is what allows us to return and fight for you with the energy and clarity your case deserves. A tired advocate makes mistakes. A rested one fights better. We come back, and we start fighting again — for you, exactly as before.

It Is Your Case. You Must Stay Engaged With It.

This is the most important thing we want you to understand, and we say it not as a complaint but as genuine, practical advice that will serve you well.

Your case belongs to you. We are your advocates — we argue it, draft it, and present it before the court — but the responsibility of staying engaged with your own matter cannot be outsourced entirely, even to the best lawyer. A case that the client actively tracks moves more smoothly than one the client has handed over and forgotten about.

Here is what this means in practice.

Coordinate with the Chamber Desk

Our chamber juniors manage the day-to-day coordination of active matters — tracking dates, organising documents, and liaising between you and the advocate handling your case. Please stay in regular touch with them. They are your first and most reliable point of contact for routine updates.

Know Your Date

Please make it a habit to know your own hearing date. We do our best to remind you in advance, but court calendars shift — a date can be preponed, adjourned, or rescheduled with little notice. A client who knows their own date and checks in proactively is far better protected than one relying solely on a reminder call.

Visit Before Your Date, Not On the Morning Of

If you have questions, documents to hand over, or concerns to discuss, please visit us or call for an appointment a few days before your hearing date — not on the morning of the hearing itself. Court mornings are when we are preparing, travelling between courtrooms, and attending to the matters listed that day. A calm conversation a few days in advance serves you far better than a rushed one outside the courtroom door.

Take an Appointment Before You Visit

We are genuinely glad to sit with you and discuss your matter in detail — but please call ahead and take an appointment. Walking in without notice often means waiting, because we may be in conference with another client or preparing for an imminent hearing. A scheduled appointment means we can give you our complete, undivided attention.

What We Promise You, Honestly

We will not promise you the polished, instant-response experience of a corporate service desk. That is not what a litigation practice is, and any firm that promises you that is not being entirely honest with you.

What we do promise is this. We will fight your case with full commitment, for as long as it takes. Despite being overloaded — despite running between courts, drafting late into the night, and managing dozens of matters at once — we make it a point to remind you of your hearing date before it arrives. We will tell you honestly where your case stands, what the realistic timeline looks like, and what to expect next. We will treat your matter — whether it is worth a few thousand rupees or several crores — with the same seriousness, because to you, it is the most important thing in the world right now, and we understand that.

A Partnership, Not a Transaction

The best outcomes in litigation come from a genuine partnership between client and advocate — not a one-way transaction where the client hands over a file and disappears, nor one where the lawyer disappears behind a wall of unavailability.

Stay engaged. Stay informed. Reach out to our chamber desk regularly. Take your appointments. Know your dates. And trust that on the other side, we are fighting for you — clumsily, tirelessly, and with full commitment — every single day that your case demands it.

That is what you should expect from us. And that is what we will continue to deliver.
